What Is THHN Wire?

THHN wire (Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated) is one of the most commonly used electrical conductors in the United States. It is designed for use in dry locations and installed primarily in conduit systems, in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).

THHN wire is known for its heat resistance, durability, and cost-effectiveness, making it a standard choice for residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations.

Construction of THHN Wire

A typical THHN wire consists of:

• Copper conductor (solid or stranded)

• PVC insulation

• Nylon outer jacket

The nylon coating provides additional protection against abrasion, moisture, oil, and chemicals during installation.

Meaning of THHN

• T – Thermoplastic insulation

• H – Heat-resistant

• H – High heat-resistant (90°C)

• N – Nylon jacket

THHN wire is rated for 90°C in dry locations.

Many THHN wires are also dual-rated as THWN-2, allowing use in wet locations at 90°C.
